Apply for a Medicare Rebate through the Mental Health Plan

To access Medicare rebates for therapy and counseling under a Mental Health Care Plan in Queensland, follow these steps:

1. Visit Your GP for a Referral

To qualify for a Medicare rebate, the first step is to see your GP for a referral to a social worker or therapist. Your GP will discuss your mental health concerns and determine if a Mental Health Care Plan is appropriate for you.

📌 Important: This plan is typically for individuals experiencing conditions such as anxiety, depression, PTSD, or other mental health concerns.

2. Ensure Eligibility for a Mental Health Plan

To be eligible for Medicare rebates for therapy, you must meet the following criteria:

✅ You must have a diagnosed mental health condition (such as depression, anxiety, etc.)
✅ You must be referred by a GP who believes you would benefit from counseling or therapy
✅ You must be a Medicare cardholder

3. Get Your Mental Health Care Plan

After your GP assessment, they will create a Mental Health Care Plan. This plan may include:

📝 A referral to a social worker or mental health counselor
📝 A recommendation for up to 10 sessions of therapy or counseling per calendar year (with the possibility of more sessions if needed)

4. Book Your Therapy Session

Once you have your referral, you can book an appointment with me.

📌 Important: Always mention that you are using a Mental Health Care Plan when booking to ensure I know to apply the Medicare rebate.

5. Claim Your Medicare Rebate

After your session I will submit the claim to Medicare for the rebate. In many cases, I will bill you for the session upfront and then process the rebate directly from Medicare.

🟢 Medicare Rebate Amount: The amount will vary depending on the type of therapy, but the typical rebate for a psychologist under a Mental Health Care Plan is around $88.25 per session (as of 2023).

6. Follow-Up Care

If you require additional therapy, your GP may provide further referrals. At the end of your sessions, or earlier if necessary, your GP will reassess your progress and may recommend more sessions if needed.

💡 Bonus Tip:
✔ Always check with your GP and therapist about the current Medicare rebate amounts and any changes in eligibility.
